Fabric From Good Will & What I Made

Recently I found some toile fabric at Good Will in a bundle with several other beautiful pieces.  I mentioned on my last post that I was trying to decide where I would use it.  The mud room and joining laundry room won out.  I already have a blue rug in the mud room, so I measured, and made very simple curtains for the rooms.  I have a french door in the mud room, and made on long curtain for it.  That way, I can fold it upwards, pin with clothes pins for a roman shade look, and to let in light in the day time.  Here are the photos of the fabric and the windows in the rooms.

The scenery on the fabric would work great in a farmhouse decorated home.
                                A lady feeding chickens, cows,

Birds flying over the pasture area with grazing horses.

This fabric would also have made a great table cloth for a long farm house table.  I have a piece large enough left to make a small table round, or runner.  I will probably make a runner from it.

Here are the windows with the new fabric curtains.  These are in the mud room.

This is how I did the door and windows in the mud room, very simple and straight.  I like having a cover on the door.  It easily can be folded up to create a roman shade.

In the laundry room, I made two tiers for the window on the door.  I like the privacy these provide.  Being alone, causes you to think more about privacy.  I never thought about it a lot when there was a man in the house, but being alone, it is more important.  I have a burglar system, plus a 38 caliber Smith and Wesson beside my bed,  :) but still.........

So, I will probably sew a runner, or maybe some placemats and napkins with the remainder of the fabric.  There is not enough to do too much, but it will be put to good use and I'll share it with you.

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

The Great White Pumpkin

Ever since I saw the pumpkins made from clothes dryer venting hose, I have wanted to make one.  It just so happened that we had some leftover vent hose in the basement, and while I was down there yesterday, I cut off a piece, taped the ends together with masking tape, and spray painted it white.  I let it dry over night.  This morning I brought it up and finished it.  This project is another freebie, because I had everything needed to complete it. I wrapped a piece of cardboard tube from wrapping paper with jute string for the stem.  Then all I had to do was stick the little sprig of orange and green in beside the stem, tie a piece of rust raffia on it, and it was done! This is a simple project, and only takes a few minutes. Once complete, I changed the coffee table vignette to include it. I placed everything in a consignment store tray I bought several years ago.  I was already using the acorns and flower arrangement on the coffee table. ...
