Vintage Compote

Do you remember the wooden compotes that everyone had back in the sixties and seventies, maybe earlier?  I found one this week at Odds and Ends for $8.00.  I looked it up on Eb ay and found a similar one for $42.00. I got a great deal, huh?  I like the scalloped edge. When I saw the compote, I knew what I would do with it.  So I mixed up some homemade chalk paint and went to work painting it white. The paint I used was old, and I had a little trouble getting the consistency I wanted, but I kept slowly adding Plaster of Paris until I got the coverage I needed.  I added a couple of coats, and used the hand sander to distress it after it dried. I went to The Graphics Fairy  website and found the graphic I had in mind and printed it off in two different sizes.  This morning I transferred the graphic to the compote.  I tried using the larger of the two graphics, but had no luck with the first try.  I thought maybe I could substitute Goo Gone for CitraSolv.....fail!  I th

These are A Few of My Favorite Things

Today I am sharing a few of the projects I did in 2011.  I put away all the Christmas decorations on Monday since I had to go back to work on Tuesday.  The house feels less cluttered.  On to the projects.............. Put chicken wire in the jelly cupboard. Painted the wire chicken white. Tried my hand at using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Wax. More Annie Sloan Made this lamp shade cover from burlap and eyelet trim. Gave this little table a much needed face lift using Annie Sloan Paint. Spray painted and distressed this old table. Painted and distressed this candle holder (was brass and UGLY) Again using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Wax Again used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to update this mirror, formerly black. Made a drop cloth table runner trimmed in burlap ribbon. Guess what I used to update a pair of cupids?  Annie Sloan! Made a coffee filter wreath. Changed this chalk topiary from green to w

Bookcase Makeover with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

I've painted another piece of furniture with Annie Sloan Chalk paint.  The jury is still out on this one.  I think I need another coat and more distressing.  I'll work on it again soon, just haven't had time in the last few days.   Click on pictures to enlarge. Here is the bookcase before. Here it is with a coat of Annie Sloan Old White. Here it is "all decked out". You can't see it very well, but I used the dark wax on the medallion on the top shelf.   I have only lightly distressed in a few places.  I really like how the paint covers, and how quickly it dries.  this shows one coat of paint.  I went back over it with a brush wet with water and thinned it somewhat.  Great paint to work with, I just need to keep trying til I get the hang of distressing. I really like the coverage this paint gives too!  I'm thinking I will order the light blue next time.   This was a thrifty makeover, only one coat of paint.  I have plenty left for my next project.

Trying Annie Sloan Paint

I'm on the band wagon.  I ordered some Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and a dark wax.  I decided the first piece I would try would be this little table that has been in my home for years.  It belonged to my dad's mom or aunt.  Can't remember which.  I scraped the old paint off years ago, about three or four shades.  Then I spray painted it and stenciled some ivy on it probably ten years ago.  I didn't really like it but it was just one of those things I never took time to change.  Here it is with the ivy. Here is the table with only the Old White Chalk paint. Here it is with lots of the dark wax on it. I like the new look although I might sand some more of the wax off.  For now, I'll enjoy it a while! Thanks for stopping by! I think I'll join in the party at Wow Us Wednesday !  Thanks Kim!  Joining Wendy at the Shabby Nest for Frugal Friday.
