Sharing Shadymont, My Mountain Cottage

Today, I'm sharing an entry table/shelf made from an old door.  It belongs to my daughter, and she bought it at the consignment shop that we visit frequently. I showed you here , where she decorated her porch for the summer in patriotic decor.  She's using it in the interior of her home as well. If you look closely, you will see that the back is made from 1/2 of the old door, while the shelves are each made from a single panel. The flag sign, and the "pray" below were painted by my granddaughter and granddaughter-in-law.  They found old wood scraps among the trees at the edge of the property, and cleaned them and painted them. The cold wintery weather has really dampened my creative spirit.  All I've wanted to do is sit in the family room with the logs on and keep warm.  FINALLY, today the sun is out, the sky is blue, and I felt like doing a little project.  I've had this tray for a couple of years, bought at consignment, and have used it in so many ways.  Here is the original look. Gray (kinda like I've been feeling)! I carried the tray filled with other items that needed a touch of white, and went to the basement to my craft table. I didn't completely cover the gray, just did my usual dry brush, hit it with a little Annie Sloan Dark Wax, and let it dry.  Then I sanded in a few spots with a sanding block.  This is the new look. The gray can still be seen in spots, but it is lighter and brighter.  This was very easy. I've had this display on the wall for a long time. Everyone loves Spring and since today we are having Spring-like weather, I decided to show you my "little spot of Spring".  This is located in a tiny hallway between the kitchen/breakfast nook, and the master suite.  It contains the linen closet, but there is an expanse of wall that just calls out for a nice vignette.  I've had this metal shelf in this spot ever since we moved into the house.  It can be decorated in many different ways.  I've had a Spring vignette on it for several months, and have really enjoyed it.  It's a small reminder that Spring is around the corner.  See what you think. Today I am sharing a few favorite fall decorations, since I am already gradually packing them away.  I'll start decorating for Christmas probably on Friday.  No way am I getting in the "Black Friday" mess!   First up is this wonderful sewing machine drawer.  It was dark wood, but only until I got it home.  I dry brushed it with white paint, and added the wreath applique.  Love it!!  It will definitely find a place in the Christmas decor!   This Thanksgiving platter is a favorite of mine.  Sadly, it will get packed away again, but I've enjoyed seeing it everyday! I've already changed the decor in the fence gate on the mantle but it will get dressed for Christmas in a few days! Texture is an important factor for interesting design.  It comes in many forms.  In the photo below, texture is plentiful.  This is a vignette in the foyer.  The picture is an old one from Home Interiors.  The frame was brown until I painted it with ASCP Olde White, and distressed it.  I also added some ASCP dark wax. This photo better shows the texture added by distressing, and waxing the frame. Another item with distinctive texture is the lampshade.  ($10.00/Wal Mart). The shade has an embroidered design. Texture is found on the candlesticks, and the ribbon tied around them. Here I used the HDR feature in Picasa to accentuate the metal's texture.   The cloth on the table is the scarf I purchased in women's clothing at Wal Mart for $5.00.  I have used it as a table runner, and now have it doubled and covering this  table.
