Changes at the Lake House

We came down on Friday for a couple weeks, and had planned before we came to downsize some while here.  I admit I'm a pack rat.  I just keep stuff.  It's organized and neat, but a lot of stuff, just the same. The lake home is a double wide mobile home, bought new in 2005.  It still looks new since we don't live here full time, and only use it as a getaway. There happened to be a friend here who wanted everything we were getting rid of.  She has a daughter and granddaughter who are moving and need everything, so we were happy to give the items to them. We gave away 5 comforters, several pictures, one really large one, sheets, towels, 2 tv's, clothing, a bed, french style dresser and chest of drawers, throws, blankets, all kinds of things.  I can't begin to name them all, but a 8 x16 trailer was full as was the back of the pickup truck! To help you appreciate the difference made in the bedrooms, I'll show you some before and after shots.  We all love those

Updating a Dresser Scarf From My Childhood

Back in the day, we didn't always have money to buy things, especially frivolous type items.  To make do, and still have a pretty home, my mother would use pretty flour sacks to make things.  Sometimes they were used to make us dresses, too.  I remember this scarf made from such a sack being used on the dresser in the "girls" pink room at our house.   I was lucky enough to still have it, and decided I would make it longer so it would work on my dining table.  It seemed a shame to not be able to use it. Isn't it pretty?  Fifty pound sacks of flour came in these pretty cotton sacks.  I wish we could still get groceries in these pretty sacks. I showed you here  how I used dust ruffles to adjust the size of my quilt.  I had 1/3 of a ruffle left from that project.  What better way to use it than to sew it to this?? This is an easy, easy project, taking literally around 10 minutes. Shabby chic look!! I love it!! I have a dash of pink in my dining

Vintage Perfection

I think I have an addiction to shopping Good Will!!  I go in several times a week since it's so close to my house, and cause you never know what you'll miss if you don't go by regularly. Right?  On a recent visit, I found quite a few items that I liked and here are some of the vintage items I found. First up, this sweet lamb planter.  I think it may be a McCoy.  It is heavy, has no markings, but I read where early on they simply placed a paper sticker on their pottery.  I did some research and it looks just like some of the ones shown as McCoy.  Either way, it is definitely old. Then I found this gorgeous bottle.  It seems old to me, and again no markings at all, but the glass has numerous bubbles, especially in the bottom. I found this pitcher to add to my non  collection.  I loved the design. I already had the yellow tin, but loved the green one, which probably isn't old. No way, could I leave this milk glass cup and saucer, in per

How I Enlarged a Quilt

AND GOT A WHOLE NEW LOOK.... Have you ever had a comforter or quilt that you loved but it just wasn't quite big enough for your bed?  Such was the case with the quilt we use in the master bedroom.  I've had the quilt for a while and it is the perfect weight for the summer, but it was like a ladies top that just didn't quite cover the tummy area. You know what I mean?  If you pulled enough it would look 'ok', but still not right.  When we made the bed, it would have to be pulled longer on the side facing the door to cover the huge mattress we have, the the backside would be too short and show the sheets.  Just a real aggravation!! I decided I'd pulled and tugged on it long enough, and granted, I probably could have bought another cover for the money I put in my fix, but it's extremely hard to find comforters/quilts to cover this KING size bed.  It has a high box springs, and a high mattress on top of that, so I wouldn't have been any better off.

Art From Note Cards

Occasionally, various organizations send address labels and note cards in hopes that you will send a contribution.  My late husband belonged to the Disabled Veterans Group, and every so often, they send beautiful cards to me.  I thought this one was beautiful, so I shopped the house for a frame, and placed a nice mat I found at Good Will for < $1 with it, and now have this sweet picture to use. I love birds and flowers, so it quickly caught my eye. I love how this turned out. It is sitting on the hall tree. Isn't it adorable? There are a couple more that would look good with this.  I just need to find more mats. This is an easy way to have unique art work.  Try it the next time you find a pretty card. If It's Tuesday......

If it's Tuesday, I'm going to Good Will!!  It's Senior discount day, and they always have the shelves full.  On this trip, I set a limit of $10.00.  Mind you, I had several more items, but I put them back because I really didn't want to spend a lot.  I did good, because after my discount, my total was $7.61! Here are my newest treasures. I just had to have this pitcher to add to my collection, which I'm no longer collecting!  :) This little tray, caught my eye, and is now in the sun room. I really liked this small china dish.  I'm using it in the guest bath as a soap dish. My favorite find was this refrigerator juice pitcher. I believe it is vintage.  The bottom is stamped "Italy". It must have been in someone's storage shed, considering the amount of dirt in the bottom.  I didn't know if I should put it in the dishwasher. If you are familiar with this piece, I'd love to kn
