Sharing Shadymont, My Mountain Cottage

After making shelves for the large cabinet in the office, there was one small piece of the 1x12 left over.  Since I can't let a good piece of wood go to waste, I came up with a really quick project to use it. First, I sanded the ends of the wood to get rid of splinters where it was originally cut.  Next, I mixed up some chalk paint and painted it white.  I then made a burlap chevron rosette, and hot glued it to the board, stenciled on a fleur de lis, and our street address, and placed it on the table in the entry.  This project was very easy, and used up some scrap wood and leftover ribbon.  When you have leftover items, try to look at them in a way that will let you create something new for your home.  Of course, I used aqua paint, and ribbon.  I have been working my favorite color into lots of areas in my home. Lots of folks in blog land are adding stripes to furniture, tables, fabric, and all kinds of things.  I have added stripes to a couple of items that I want to share with you. This table belonged to my paternal grandmother.  I barely remember her.  I do remember using this table like a desk as a little girl.  It was dark brown.  Years later, I started sanding the top and went through multiple layers of paint.  Even an old newspaper sheet was underneath all the paint.  I had used a stripper though, and the paper was ruined, so I don't know why it was there.   When I first started blogging, I was introduced to Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  This table was the first item I painted with it (Olde White).  I was getting the feel of the paint and dark wax, and ended up waxing it very heavily.  I decided I liked the "stripped" look that the wax brought to the table, so I left it that way. I found this bread box at a yard sale in May of 2012 for $8.00.  The lady having the yard sale had done the crackle finish on it. I liked it since the taupe and cream blended well with my counter top, so I've used it this way ever since I bought it. This morning, I was in the mood to be a little creative, so I decided to give the bread box a makeover.  I had all the paints and supplies in my stash, so this upgrade cost me nothing.  You can see below, that the box had a low sheen. Since I wanted to give it a distressed look, I didn't sand or anything.  I wanted some of the colors to show through the new paint color. I gave it a "messy" paint technique, not quite a dry-brush, but a look where the brush strokes showed.   I painted the hinges and knob with a white acrylic paint then took some of the paint off with a steel wool. I was at Kirkland's today looking in the 'green tag' section, and found this lamp shade for $6.00.  It is a great update for this lamp. The shade generally on this lamp is burgundy. I bought the canvas also.  It was on sale for $20.00.   I left the frenchie basket and the birdcage in the vignette. I like the way the canvas and the lamp shade blend. Simple, inexpensive changes gives the room a whole new look. The picture that was here was moved to the dining room. My husband was a professional truck driver during his working years, hauling hazardous materials.  Most of the time, there were two drivers in each truck.  This allowed the truck to move 24/7.  He did this for nearly 40 years.  One of the drivers who teamed with him years ago, built this rough old box from plywood for them to place between the seats, to hold items they needed, and keep them from being loose in the cab.  We came across the "trunk" a few weeks ago when we were organizing the basement, and I set it aside for a makeover.  I didn't take a before picture, but it was plywood, covered with polyurathene.   You can see from the inside, how roughly built it is.   Imagine the outside, looking the same, but with polyurathene. Just wanted to show you the cutest little box I found at DG for $3.50.  It's perfect to hold the remote, a pen and pad, or any other small items you need close at hand or need to keep corralled.  I placed this one on the coffee table in the living room. The fleur de lis is so cute, and the top of the lid has french wording.  Velcro holds it shut.  Cute, huh? I like its low profile since it sits between the love seat and the t.v.   I wanted to share this with you in case you have been looking for something like this.  It would be great to store photos, greeting cards, recipes, or anything similar.  Check out your Dollar General while they are available.
