Sharing Shadymont, My Mountain Cottage

For the past 4 weeks, we have been in the process of getting our home exterior painted.  I will share more in a later post, but I wanted to show you the screened porch (in progress).  We painted the exterior in a darker gray (Benjamin Moore, Stormy Sky).  I chose solid color stain in BM Brick Red for the porch floor and railings.  I am delighted with the way it looks so far.  We removed the screen, and it will be replaced next week.  We had a variety of furniture on the porch, which we had the painter spray in the color of the house foundation, which is BM Metropolitan (a light gray). Now all the seating is one color which is much better. I bought the two red plant stands from Lowe's.  I have a bench cushion ordered for the swing.  My husband had this swing from years ago.  It was so chippy, so we pressure washed it, then sanded, and had it painted so we could use it on the screened porch. This weekend, it will be official!  Autumn will be here, according to the calendar!   Our temperatures have become a little milder, and our days shorter.  My granddaughter (6) asked me today what I liked about Autumn.  We each named off different things we liked.  She loves the colorful leaves, pumpkin farms, trick or treating, cooler weather, etc.  I explained to her that I loved those things too, and toasting marshmallows, the smell of a wood fire coming from someone's chimney.  It was so sweet to get her take on what Fall means to her.  Smart little girl, my Rheagan!  I picked her up from school and carried her to get her nails polished.  She chose light green polish!  Then we had a snack next door at a sandwich shop.  I love our talks!  You can learn a lot from a 6 year old, especially one with a vivid imagination, and a creative spirit.  She loves doing crafts, drawing, coloring, and "writing books", oh and ...

I'm busy tweaking some of my original Fall decor.  I started with just a small amount of color on the dining room table. I had planned to stop with just this, but then decided to use a table cloth I found last year at a consignment shop.  I removed the drop cloth/burlap runner, and bunched up the table cloth in the center of the table.  I also added a small black dough bowl filled with flowers/leaves, to the vignette.  I kept the candlesticks too.    Here is the more colorful vignette. The colorful cloth works well to anchor the vignette. I kept the sideboard as I decorated it a while ago, simply adding some acorns to the basket, and a fabric pumpkin I made last year to the end of the table.   The burlap wreath I made last year got a colorful update with the orange mums.   The bookcase got a few Fall touches. I'm not ready to go all out for Fall, just yet, but it's getting harder and harder not to bring out all the oranges and rusts.  I finally gave in, somewhat, and made a spray for the green lantern/ bird cage in the sun room.  Since the colors in there are green, white, and pink , I chose plum colors for the spray. Here is the lantern without anything attached to it. I dug through some of my bins in the basement, and found a few scraps of faux florals that were deep plum in color.  I fastened them together with metal and plastic ties.   The spray consists of a piece of vine with small lavender flowers which I cut into 4 pieces to make it shorter and easier to work with.  Then I had two small sprays with the berries, and the deep lilac looking flowers, and one huge bunch of grapes.  Once I got everything tied together, I attached it to the handle of the lantern with the burlap ribbon without tying a bow. I can never leave well enough alone.  That's just how I am.  While puttering around the house recently, I moved items here and there, added a few, took some away.  You know the drill.  Here are a few more places where "fall" has touched my home. This sits on top of the pie safe.  The plate had been in a bookcase in the family room. It was a consignment store find.   On the corner cabinet in the breakfast nook, I added these fall napkins and a strand of garland to the vignette on top.  This old jar belonged to my MIL.   I switched the faux fruit and pumpkins to this little basket/tray I bought last year on consignment. I added this quilt to the end of our bed for another touch of fall color. The old bread board I did a makeover on got a strip of burlap and a couple of fall leaves added to it. I had the day off today, and decided I would put a few autumn decorations out.  I haven't gone to the basement and brought up the "big stash", but used what I had stored upstairs.  I'll get the other out in a few days. I started in the dining room and I'm sure this will change when I get the other items upstairs.  So I took a few photos while it looks like this. First, let me say.......... Found this at "Sweet Tea" for a little over a dollar, I think $1.49. Added this garland to the bookcase.  It is a Dollar Tree find from last year. Added  some pumpkins and gourds to the tiered stand on the dining room table. Bought this bouquet at Dollar General last year.
