Upcycling Old Doors and Windows

Today, I'm sharing an entry table/shelf made from an old door.  It belongs to my daughter, and she bought it at the consignment shop that we visit frequently. I showed you here , where she decorated her porch for the summer in patriotic decor.  She's using it in the interior of her home as well. If you look closely, you will see that the back is made from 1/2 of the old door, while the shelves are each made from a single panel. It is a heavy piece of furniture.  Notice the different columns used as support. View from the side. Here you can see the old window with a flag painted on it hanging just above the table. The flag sign, and the "pray" below were painted by my granddaughter and granddaughter-in-law.  They found old wood scraps among the trees at the edge of the property, and cleaned them and painted them. We were so excited when she bought this. A gentleman in the parking lot of the store helped us tie it into the trunk of m...

For the Love of Doors

I love old doors.  Knowing that, my daughter gave me a beautiful one for my birthday.  I am still deciding on where to put it, and am trying it out in several places. She found this in a local shop.  It's a cabinet door, distressed, and painted.  It is very heavy.  I first placed it on the mantel, and liked it there, but I love having my grandchildren's picture there, so it didn't stay there very long.  Next, I placed it on the little shelf I had attached to another door, but was afraid the small shelf wouldn't hold the weight of the door for very long. I really like it here, so I will probably try to put it back there after I figure out a way to assure that the small shelf won't fall. It doesn't have any way to hang it at present, that is another option, making a hanger for it.   Currently, it is on the small cupboard in the dining room. Where do you like it best, on the mantel, other door, or on the cupboard?...

Touring Granny's House

NOT YOUR USUAL HOME TOUR Week before last, I had the opportunity to go back to the homeplace where my maternal grandmother lived when my siblings and I were growing up!! What a wonderful opportunity. We had heard that the home was still standing, or at least part of it is.  My sister, cousin, and I made the trip down to check it out for ourselves.  None of us had been there in 50 years. When we arrived at the place that we remembered as the home place, we could not see the old house. Whoever now owns the property has recently done a lot of grading, plowing, and clearing of land in the area, and we were so afraid that the old home had been pushed down and destroyed. We climbed through a fence opening, covered in large briars to make our way down the old road bed that we could see. We estimated that it was 3/4  mile down to where "granny" lived.  I walked off and left the other two, I was so anxious to see what lay ahead of us.  The farther down I walked, ...
