Sharing Shadymont, My Mountain Cottage

We are having glorious weather in the North Georgia mountains. Yesterday, it reached 78 degrees, on the 24th of February. Hope this isn't an indication of things to come!!  I enjoy cooler weather.  We'll take what we get, though, right?  It's all good!! With all the tulips, forsythia, and jonquils blooming everywhere, I decided a spring mantel was in order, and of course I have my faux flowers placed here and there.  If spring isn't officially here, it's here inside my home!  I do realize we might have more winter weather, but at the moment, we are celebrating spring at Shadymont. It may seem a little early for some of you, but I was so tired of the snowmen, snowflakes, and wintery decor that I decided to go ahead and decorate for Valentine's Day.  Pops of red seem warm and cheery. The first thing I usually change for any occasion, is the mantel. I used my consignment shutter, some Dollar Tree flowers and heart-shaped vases, candles, a baske (recent consignment find) and updated my Christmas/Winter wreath from the front door, by adding a Dollar Tree red tinsel heart to it, and hanging it on the mirror above the mantel.  The only new items are the red doilies (Michael's) - I think they were $1.00 each, the red basket, and the red tinsel heart attached to the wreath. This wreath was decorated with green ball ornaments during Christmas.  I removed the ornaments, and hung a snowman in the center until I brought it in and attached the heart.  So this wreath has already been recycled twice.   I spent ve...

I bought this trio of candlesticks a number of years ago at Kirkland's, and have had them on display somewhere in the house ever since. I've enjoyed them in bronze with the slight white-washed effect, but decided they could stand a makeover.  Out came my Lowe's sample paint in white.   I brushed on three coats of paint. I placed them on the dresser in the master bedroom, where they are reflected in the mirror. I decided they needed a little bling, and used small jute string to tie charms on them. Two of the charms are angels, and one is a cross. I'm sure I will enjoy the change. I really like the white candles with the white candlesticks.   A nice change, no money spent!  My kind of decorating!! I've noticed the jonquils are blooming, but I'm afraid the current low temperatures are going to freeze their blooms.  I love the first bursts of yellow that come forth in the Spring, the sound of birds singing.  With that in mind, I changed the mantel decor, and added some birds here and there.   The mantel now holds this picture of hydrangeas.  I added the candles and a pineapple finial, and a bronze bird.   On the bombe table are two birds I bought at Dollar Tree.  Their colors make me smile.  The colors of Spring. Well of course, the mantel has to have some Valentine goodies displayed, so I got busy and spiffed up my "gate" .  All I did was add some heart picks, and hang two red berry hearts on it. Red candles were added to my white candlesticks, and garland was wrapped around them.  I aded two heart shaped bud vases with red roses, and called it done. I've tried not to over do the decor this year.  In the living room, I just added a few items to announce the coming of Fall. I simply paired the pheasant picture with its lovely colors with this pottery from my daughter.   The small terra cotta pot below is a regular little flower pot to which I added rub-on decals many years ago. I simply added a twig pumpkin which fit perfectly. A simple orange berry ring was added to the lantern on the mantel.  At each end of the mantel, I added these candles and pumpkins. I simply wrapped a strip of burlap around the white candlesticks, and as you can see, I added these silky DT leaves on with a thumb tack, albeit white, to give a little color. The coffee table simply holds this little bouquet of flowers in a crock jar wrapped with burlap sitting on a charger inside this basket that just got a makeover.
