Linens & Things

I love finding tablecloths, runners, napkins, and other linens when I am out thrifting. Whether it be at consignment shops, GW, or yard sales, I will usually snap up a pretty linen if it doesn't have a lot of stains.  I will show you some of my favorites.

I found several pieces embroideried with this design at a favorite consignment shop.

This blue runner (reversible to stripes), found on consignment.

This is one of the nicer quality tablecloths I have found, $4.00 at a thrift store.

This cloth was around $10.00 on consignment.

This runner is also reversible to polka dots, and was a consignment find.

This pink and white gingham is perfect in the sun room, and is a consignment find also.

This is the most valuable table cloth I have found, and it was $2.00 at a nearby yard sale.  It is a vintage Wielunder.  They sell on ebay for 30 - 90 dollars.  Mine is in pristine condition!

By keeping your eye out while thrifting, you can acquire linens for all occasions.    Do you buy your linens this way?

  7. Kathy, Love all your linens, but especially your Wilendur. I was trying to see the pattern, is it lilacs? I have that one also, it's beautiful! I find mine at estate sales, consignment shops, antique malls, but only rarely at the thrifts.

  13. I love those runners you found, Kathy! Especially that they reverse to a different pattern. It's like getting two for the price of one! I always like looking at tablecloths, although I don't usually use them myself. I especially admire those with wonderful detail on them.

  16. You certainly have acquired quite a collection of pretty linens. I love linens too. They are just so sweet and reminders of a slower time of life, where we enjoy pretty things and not everything was a throwaway for convenience sake.

  22. They're all so pretty, but my favorite is the Wielunder. I'm always thrilled when I find a vintage cloth in perfect condition at a yard sale or thrift shop. I have one now that's waiting to see if I can get some stains out. If not, I'll just have to repurpose it.

  24. Hi Kathy. I've come to visit and am now your newest follower too. I love finding pretty linens at the thrift stores and sales. I have a few nice tablecloths from the 40's and 50's, but got them mostly on e-bay when I was working, when I could afford to do that. I haven't found any really old ones but have found some doilies and such. In fact, today I made a pillow for the guest bedroom using fabric that I got at HobbyLobby and a piece of embroidery that I found at a sale. I will be sharing them shortly. Now, I'm going back to see some of your past posts and your finds are all so pretty..Happy Weekend..Judy

  35. Your linens are fabulous. I love them. Thanks so much for joining Inspire Me and for your suggestion about my blog problem. The problem is when you go to dashboard on blogger and you see on the left hand side the reading list, there you see the latest posts and they show a small thumbnail and then a snippet of text about the blog. If you scroll down to my blog, there is no thumbnail, only text. Mine disappeared on 2/21 and I have tried to figure out how to get it back. Do you have any suggestions.

  43. Hi Kathy, I'm so glad your comments are workable again. For a while there I couldn't comment because of google plus. Glad to see that's fixed. Love your linens. Wish I had more of a way to use old ones. They do catch my eye when I'm out and about. If I found just the right styles, I'd buy them, but you have to be first at a sale to get the pretty ones around here it seems. You did good finding all you did!

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

The Great White Pumpkin

Ever since I saw the pumpkins made from clothes dryer venting hose, I have wanted to make one.  It just so happened that we had some leftover vent hose in the basement, and while I was down there yesterday, I cut off a piece, taped the ends together with masking tape, and spray painted it white.  I let it dry over night.  This morning I brought it up and finished it.  This project is another freebie, because I had everything needed to complete it. I wrapped a piece of cardboard tube from wrapping paper with jute string for the stem.  Then all I had to do was stick the little sprig of orange and green in beside the stem, tie a piece of rust raffia on it, and it was done! This is a simple project, and only takes a few minutes. Once complete, I changed the coffee table vignette to include it. I placed everything in a consignment store tray I bought several years ago.  I was already using the acorns and flower arrangement on the coffee table. ...
