Some Thrifty Finds

My daughter and I went to a favorite consignment shop today. I saw quite a few items I wanted, but restrained myself and only purchased two things.

This flower arrangement, paper whites (I guess). I was thinking, I can use it for any season. During the Fall, I'll tie a Fall colors ribbon on it, at Christmas, a red ribbon. So, for $8.99, it was a good purchase.

I like the look of the paperwhites on the burlap runner. The white crispness against the texture of the runner will go well into Fall.

The other item I purchased is a Waverly valance for the powder room. I love the colors and the print, and it was only $12.99.

I love the cottage print with the matching stripes on the bottom section.

It looks like new, so I'm not sure how much it was used, but I really like it in the powder room.

Earlier today, I gathered all my dried hydrangeas together and put them in the aqua tin I bought for a dollar at an estate sale recently.

I placed it on the hearth as a transitional piece leaning toward Fall. I'm ready to bring out some warm Autumn colors, are you?

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it. The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little. It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it! I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before. So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00. I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway. Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project. I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow. First, I found an old pillow I no longer use. I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it. I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers. I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night. The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion. I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

The Great White Pumpkin

Ever since I saw the pumpkins made from clothes dryer venting hose, I have wanted to make one. It just so happened that we had some leftover vent hose in the basement, and while I was down there yesterday, I cut off a piece, taped the ends together with masking tape, and spray painted it white. I let it dry over night. This morning I brought it up and finished it. This project is another freebie, because I had everything needed to complete it. I wrapped a piece of cardboard tube from wrapping paper with jute string for the stem. Then all I had to do was stick the little sprig of orange and green in beside the stem, tie a piece of rust raffia on it, and it was done! This is a simple project, and only takes a few minutes. Once complete, I changed the coffee table vignette to include it. I placed everything in a consignment store tray I bought several years ago. I was already using the acorns and flower arrangement on the coffee table. ...
