The Domino Effect

We've all talked about it!  When you move one thing, it starts a domino effect. Yesterday I showed you how I changed the family room mantel by placing my aqua frame on it, instead of the white gate.  This is what happened to the gate filled with Fall flowers.  It switched places, and was put on top of the jelly cupboard where the frame had been.

This way I can use some shades of blue in both rooms.

Then the shutters which were temporarily sitting on the hearth were moved to the entry table.

Here I am using them as a back drop.  You can see my attempt at painting hydrangeas in a white pitcher.  I'm trying to teach myself to paint.  Not very good at it, but I enjoy trying.   Here is the dryer vent pumpkin I made last year.

These flowers came from the dollar tree, and look really good for a dollar a bush.

Now the entry, family room, and sun room all have orange and blues.

Oh, guess what I did this morning???

I packed up a bunch of decor items I had stashed in the guest room closet, and carried it down to the basement.  Then.....I went through all my bins (20 or so), and sorted everything into the bin it should be in, made new labels for all the bins, and it looks so much better!  It felt so good to get that done.  I had let it get into a mess.

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

The Great White Pumpkin

Ever since I saw the pumpkins made from clothes dryer venting hose, I have wanted to make one.  It just so happened that we had some leftover vent hose in the basement, and while I was down there yesterday, I cut off a piece, taped the ends together with masking tape, and spray painted it white.  I let it dry over night.  This morning I brought it up and finished it.  This project is another freebie, because I had everything needed to complete it. I wrapped a piece of cardboard tube from wrapping paper with jute string for the stem.  Then all I had to do was stick the little sprig of orange and green in beside the stem, tie a piece of rust raffia on it, and it was done! This is a simple project, and only takes a few minutes. Once complete, I changed the coffee table vignette to include it. I placed everything in a consignment store tray I bought several years ago.  I was already using the acorns and flower arrangement on the coffee table. ...
