Let's Texturize!

Do you like the depth that texture gives to your decor?  The top shelf on my small book case has some great examples of using texture in small ways for a big impact.

My granddaughter and I went 'exploring' the other day, and I found this old amber bottle against a tree near the road.  It's probably a beer bottle, but I liked the color, and the short neck, so I brought it home, and washed it off, and here it is.

Some of the dirt residue can be seen inside it, but I don't mind.  At first I tied a tag on it, but didn't like that, so I rummaged through some old jewelry, and found this filigreed heart from years ago, slipped it on some lace I found at a yard sale, and looped it over the bottle.  Love the texture of the lace and heart.

Something old and dirty can become a treasure with a little imagination.

It sits beside this bottle.  I like its unique shape, and had already accessorized it with burlap ribbon and this cross bookmark that was my MILs.  The texture of the burlap plays well with the patina of the old bookmark.

Here they are together.  There are lots of other textures in the vignette, the applique on the bookcase, the tassel, the wood of the old door and the metal sign on the door. Then there's the doily that gives more texture.

Here more texture is brought into the arrangement.  The wicker of the tall box, and the metal swirls of the lamp base make it more interesting to the eye.

This photo shows the amber bottle with the tag hanging from it.  Here you can see a bit of the burlap wreath with eyelet flowerettes hanging on the old door that I painted and distressed.

Love the message below.  "Laugh Uncontrollaby"!

I love the message on the metal sign.
This is the sweet little sign I bought at Odds and Ends Shop near my home.  I'm loving that place.

Look around your home and see if there are places you can add interest by using texture.  It's simple and inexpensive.  I already had everything shown, and am enjoying this vignette.

And don't forget,
LAUGH.....
Uncontrollably!!!!!!

  2. Thanks for coming by Kathy. I am behind in my visits! I love the bottle texture you added.

We had a 60 foot porch at the farm, with cedar rails and posts. I liked to have ferns between the posts. I miss that big ol' porch!

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

The Great White Pumpkin

Ever since I saw the pumpkins made from clothes dryer venting hose, I have wanted to make one.  It just so happened that we had some leftover vent hose in the basement, and while I was down there yesterday, I cut off a piece, taped the ends together with masking tape, and spray painted it white.  I let it dry over night.  This morning I brought it up and finished it.  This project is another freebie, because I had everything needed to complete it. I wrapped a piece of cardboard tube from wrapping paper with jute string for the stem.  Then all I had to do was stick the little sprig of orange and green in beside the stem, tie a piece of rust raffia on it, and it was done! This is a simple project, and only takes a few minutes. Once complete, I changed the coffee table vignette to include it. I placed everything in a consignment store tray I bought several years ago.  I was already using the acorns and flower arrangement on the coffee table. ...
