Dining Room ~ Christmas 2012

Do you remember the beautiful Festive Holly (Nikko/Japan) dinnerware I bought last year at the consignment sale I helped my daughter with?  I researched on Replacements.com, and they would have cost $419.50 if I'd bought them a piece at the time (doesn't include shipping).  I got all this for $19.50!!  Probably my best bargain EVAH!!  Not even a single chip!

Last year, I used gold chargers.  This year I'm using silver.  They are the only new item on this table, and were 98 cents each at Wal Mart.

I could hardly wait to get them out again this year. Aren't they pretty??

This table cloth was bought at the same consignment sale for $4 - $5.  I just draped it over the drop cloth table cloth on the table, since it's only 52" x 70".
A perfect cloth with the dishes, don't you think?

This pedestal was a KMart find a number of years ago for $5.00.  The green bowl was purchased at a consignment shop near our SW Georgia home.  The pine cones are some I picked up there last year.  These wood candlesticks show up everywhere.  They're old as well.

The green glasses are Anchor Hocking, and belonged to my MIL.  I really treasure these, and they too are perfect for this table!

The silver candle rings are from Good Will a couple of years ago.  The red napkins are from Wal Mart.  The white napkins were from a set of 12 that came with a table cloth that I purchased in the 80's at a pottery nearby.  Don't they look great with the dishware?

This stainless is from the consignment sale my daughter held.  I got 40 pieces for $10.00.  That was a fabulous bargain too.  They are very plain, but are nice and heavy.

This was the very first thing I did to decorate for Christmas.  I just couldn't wait to enjoy these fabulous finds!  This table was done very frugally, and I couldn't be happier with it!  It just sings Christmas!

  4. What a beautiful table setting. I think I have similar china. Pretty sure I do. But, then I find many times you and I think a lot the same. Thank you for coming by my blog and encouraging me while I make some changes. Now I wish I had never started the process. Hugs, to you. Karie

  5. Kathy,
What a lovely table, and great deals! A dropcloth would save me a lot of trouble, since so few of my tablecloths are large enough when all the leaves are in it.

  8. Hi Kathy, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Looks like you are well on your way to a fabulously decorated Christmas season. I love your table cloth too. Reminds me of one we had growing up and it looks beautiful with your dishes. Those chairs look comfy too. I'm all about a comfy chair during a wonderful meal. Makes lingering over it much more enjoyable.

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

The Great White Pumpkin

Ever since I saw the pumpkins made from clothes dryer venting hose, I have wanted to make one.  It just so happened that we had some leftover vent hose in the basement, and while I was down there yesterday, I cut off a piece, taped the ends together with masking tape, and spray painted it white.  I let it dry over night.  This morning I brought it up and finished it.  This project is another freebie, because I had everything needed to complete it. I wrapped a piece of cardboard tube from wrapping paper with jute string for the stem.  Then all I had to do was stick the little sprig of orange and green in beside the stem, tie a piece of rust raffia on it, and it was done! This is a simple project, and only takes a few minutes. Once complete, I changed the coffee table vignette to include it. I placed everything in a consignment store tray I bought several years ago.  I was already using the acorns and flower arrangement on the coffee table. ...
