The Versatile Scarf

I found a beautiful fall scarf in the clothing department at Wal Mart for $5.00.   When I saw it, I knew what I would do with it.  It is now a runner on the dining room table.  I love the colors, and the paisley design picks up on those in my drapes and rug.  
It fits the table perfectly and gives it a different feel.
The best part is that it cost less than buying a typical runner this size, so I'm happy about that.  
Here's a close up of the pattern.  The reverse side has more green and could easily be reversed for a totally different dominant color.  Or, if the notion strikes, it can be worn.  Now that's versatility at its best!
I rumpled up the scarf for a softer look.


The base cloth is a drop cloth, another versatile item.   I originally had layered it with the cloth below that I found on consignment.  Since I'm now using the scarf in the dining room,  I moved the previous tablecloth to the table in the entryway.



Keep in mind that scarves can be used for table runners when you see these larger ones in the stores, especially at this price!  I have another one that I bought last year in reds, blacks and grays, that might show up  somewhere soon.

    I often look at pretty scarves to use as a runner. Because I have indoor cats, I just don't think they would leave the scarf alone.
    Your design is gorgeous. You have a flair for decorating.

    Love that scarf, great find!!! I often use scarves and shawls to decorate my tables and buffet with, or draped on the arm of a chair or back of sofa. And then I can still wear them!!!

    What a sweet use of scarves. I am not one who wears scarves so I don't have any to press into service like this, but there are so many pretty ones out there that could be used for such a purpose rather than spending all their time in a drawer or closet. Great idea! You are keeping things fresh and fun!

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...
