Musty Old Books and Tiny Treasures

While rambling through some boxes stored in our basement, I came across some old books.  They formerly belonged to my Mother in Law.  I took them from the box and began looking through them.  One of them was written in 1928, and my MIL had dated one of them when she got it in 1942.  The one from 1928 is really ragged, but has such beautiful character.  I immediately brought the books upstairs, wiped off some of their mustiness, tied them up with twine and inserted them into my decor.

She often referred to the Natural Home Remedies book.

The book farthest to the right is Selected Words of Stephen Vincent Benet-Poetry.  It has the handwritten date of 1942 inside the cover.

The book beside it with the ragged spine is the book copyrighted in 1928, and is also a book of poetry.  The other book is A Treasury of Good Mysteries.

Don't they add character to this vignette?

The box in the vignette is one I bought at an antique store for $4.99, I think.
It has a yellow hue, and warms up the vignette.

I just adore these books!!
Look at this tiny treasure I found in one of the books!

It has patina that only age can give!  I can only imagine how old this is.
It reminded me of an old house key I have that belonged to my first MIL. (I've had two).
It found a place in this vignette too.
Aren't they just precious?
I think this is one of my all time favorite vignettes.

  8. This is a wonderful vignette! I have a lifelong love of books, and vintage books are so special. My MIL brought me a vintage child's communion book from one of the street markets in France. It has the most beautiful gold tooling on it, and it always resides on our foyer table.

You're doing a great job of making your home lovely. Have a wonderful weekend!

  17. Yes, yes, yes! The books and little found artifacts add such a wonderful dimension to your vignette. I do so love an old cloth bound book. I'm always on the look out. And I wouldn't be against finding a little treasure inside either! Very nice.

  18. Such precious treasures and they look lovely in your vignette. My mom (who is nearing 90) is a book lover also, and her favorites are mysteries(she reads two to three a week!) - so your MIL's mystery book gave me an extra smile. Jane

Linens & Things

I love finding tablecloths, runners, napkins, and other linens when I am out thrifting. Whether it be at consignment shops, GW, or yard sales, I will usually snap up a pretty linen if it doesn't have a lot of stains.  I will show you some of my favorites. I found several pieces embroideried with this design at a favorite consignment shop. This blue runner (reversible to stripes), found on consignment. This is one of the nicer quality tablecloths I have found, $4.00 at a thrift store. This cloth was around $10.00 on consignment. This runner is also reversible to polka dots, and was a consignment find. This pink and white gingham is perfect in the sun room, and is a consignment find also. This is the most valuable table cloth I have found, and it was $2.00 at a nearby yard sale.  It is a vintage Wielunder.  They sell on ebay for 30 - 90 dollars.  Mine is in pristine condition! Christmas tablecloth, consignment sale. ...

What's in the Hutch?

Yesterday I awoke in the mood to do some "deep" cleaning.  First on my list was to dust inside the china cabinet in the dining room.  Can you believe how much dust can get into a closed cabinet.  Really, how does that happen?  My cabinet has glass shelves and they were hazy with dust.  This is a rather tedious job because I not only have china inside, I have all kinds of little "pretties" stored there too.  It's one of the first things you see upon entry into our home, so I really should do this more often.  I want show you the before, sufficeth to say, it had been a while since I had tackled this chore.  Here are some photos showing the "after". Here is a collection of vases and crystal pitchers .   These were all gifts except the smallest one in the front and the one to the right of it. China and a consignment shop cake plate.  The china was formerly my MILs. More china . This little fairy lives here with her 2 sisters. They ...

Market Basket

Finally....I made it to Hen's Nest, my fave consignment shop.  I bought several things, but I just have to show this to you right now.  I'll share the other items later.  I stopped by the Dollar Tree on my way home and grabbed some fall flowers, and quickly poked them into the basket.  I didn't even cut the little bushes apart.  I just spread the stems out and voila! I'll do it right soon, I was just too impatient to show you the basket. Just look at this wonderful basket!! Basket Cost: $8.99....whoo hoo! Flowers: $1.00 per bunch x 7 = $7.00 Already had the burlap garland. Does anyone know what the P&G stands for?  The shop owner thought that maybe it was a grocery store name and she doesn't think it's very old.  It has a handle, it's just covered with flowers.  Don't you love the way they did the letters on the front?  I don't care if it's vintage or not, it just has character, and I can think of may uses. Lo...
