Recent Thrifty Finds

WARNING: LONG POST :)
I found two wonderful items Sunday at the consignment shop.  This lamp was only $9.99.  I knew immediately that it would look good in the powder room.

The urn in the picture is similar to the base of the lamp which looks like an urn.

Cute, Huh?
I like the shape of the shade.

Another item I found is unusual.  I have never seen one, so at $4.99, I decided I would buy it.

It's an egg holder made from wire.  Isn't it pretty?  I placed tea lights in it instead.

It would be pretty holding eggs, but I like it with the tea lights.

I love the texture it brings to the tray vignette on the breakfast table.

Have you ever seen an egg holder like this?

A couple of weeks ago, I went to a community yard sale held in a large pavilion at the fair grounds.  I bought several items there and only spent $3.50.
I bought an empty picture frame that was already painted hunter green.  I used some of my home made chalk paint and lightened it up.
Here it is painted and distressed and with a little dark wax.

At first I was just going to use it as a back drop on the living room bookcases.  Then I had this idea!

I had chicken wire left from another project so I stapled some on the back of the frame, then used clothes pins to attach pictures of my family to it.

Later, I added the burlap bow.

I love having it in my office.  Total cost ( already had everything but the frame) $1.00

A full roll of lace, (like on the cherub above) and the cherub (which also got a coat of chalk paint) were other items along with the frame that I bought for  a total of $2.50.

Then at another vendor's site, I purchased these for fifty cents each.
The necklace the pink cupid is wearing, and the earrings (new, still on the card), costume jewelry, but for fifty cents each, who cares?

On the day that I found the blue picnic basket, I also found this wooden box at an antique mall.

El Pinto is a brand of Salsa.  Isn't this a cute box?  This is in its original condition.  The yellow color was already on the wood.  I think I paid about five dollars for it.

Here's another photo of the basket I found on the same day.

Oh, we can't forget the turquoise quail.

I think I've had good luck recently.  I have easily worked all my finds into the decor, so I'm happy. :)  All these items total about forty dollars!!

Hope you are finding some wonderful items too!

  1. Love the lamp Kathy, it looks a treat where you have placed it :o) The wirework egg holder is very unusual, and looks great as a tealight holder. What a good use for the frame, to look at and appreciate each day!

  4. You really have found some great items. The lamp goes perfectly and I love the wire egg holder. I have never seen one like that either. Your wooden box and picnic basket are cute also. Your turquoise quail is similar to a green game hen I bought on clearance at T.J. Maxx. Thanks for sharing your finds with Share Your Cup.

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

The Great White Pumpkin

Ever since I saw the pumpkins made from clothes dryer venting hose, I have wanted to make one.  It just so happened that we had some leftover vent hose in the basement, and while I was down there yesterday, I cut off a piece, taped the ends together with masking tape, and spray painted it white.  I let it dry over night.  This morning I brought it up and finished it.  This project is another freebie, because I had everything needed to complete it. I wrapped a piece of cardboard tube from wrapping paper with jute string for the stem.  Then all I had to do was stick the little sprig of orange and green in beside the stem, tie a piece of rust raffia on it, and it was done! This is a simple project, and only takes a few minutes. Once complete, I changed the coffee table vignette to include it. I placed everything in a consignment store tray I bought several years ago.  I was already using the acorns and flower arrangement on the coffee table. ...
