Something Different in the Kitchen

A few years ago, my husband bought this piece from his son who was moving, and no longer wanted it.

We immediately placed it in the breakfast nook, without much thought, and that is where it has been ever since. I've been thinking about using it as an island for a while, but just never moved it. Y'all have heard me lament about not being able to redo my kitchen. With this piece moved to the kitchen, it works for a change to the room, and we will decide after a few days living with it there, whether or not we leave it.  It's an affordable way to make a slight change.

It blends well with the cabinets, and the white appliances, and I like that.

I tried it turned from side to side, but that narrowed the traffic pattern too much.

I had two wooden knobs from another piece of furniture that got new ones, so since I didn't want the shiny brass ones, I switched them out.  I also added a hook to the side for a towel.

It is centered between the sink, stove, and fridge, so it will make a convenient prep area.

I used the french drying rack to style the piece.  I replaced all the cups with white ones, and put a placemat underneath.

I think I'm going to like it here, but time will tell.  If not, it's not hard to move it from the room. I think it adds some interest to the boring cabinets!! Do y'all think I should paint it another color?  I might attach a towel bar to the side for towels, rather than the hook.

Linens & Things

I love finding tablecloths, runners, napkins, and other linens when I am out thrifting. Whether it be at consignment shops, GW, or yard sales, I will usually snap up a pretty linen if it doesn't have a lot of stains.  I will show you some of my favorites. I found several pieces embroideried with this design at a favorite consignment shop. This blue runner (reversible to stripes), found on consignment. This is one of the nicer quality tablecloths I have found, $4.00 at a thrift store. This cloth was around $10.00 on consignment. This runner is also reversible to polka dots, and was a consignment find. This pink and white gingham is perfect in the sun room, and is a consignment find also. This is the most valuable table cloth I have found, and it was $2.00 at a nearby yard sale.  It is a vintage Wielunder.  They sell on ebay for 30 - 90 dollars.  Mine is in pristine condition! Christmas tablecloth, consignment sale. ...

What's in the Hutch?

Yesterday I awoke in the mood to do some "deep" cleaning.  First on my list was to dust inside the china cabinet in the dining room.  Can you believe how much dust can get into a closed cabinet.  Really, how does that happen?  My cabinet has glass shelves and they were hazy with dust.  This is a rather tedious job because I not only have china inside, I have all kinds of little "pretties" stored there too.  It's one of the first things you see upon entry into our home, so I really should do this more often.  I want show you the before, sufficeth to say, it had been a while since I had tackled this chore.  Here are some photos showing the "after". Here is a collection of vases and crystal pitchers .   These were all gifts except the smallest one in the front and the one to the right of it. China and a consignment shop cake plate.  The china was formerly my MILs. More china . This little fairy lives here with her 2 sisters. They ...

Decorating Slump

I have absolutely had the hardest time deciding on how to decorate the dining room table for Thanksgiving.  I am not satisfied with anything I've done.  I'll show you the latest in a long string of 'tries'. Anyway, this is the latest try.  I bought six of these chargers at Dollar Tree, at $1 each.   I layered with this dinner plate and salad plate purchased from Wal Mart several years ago. I stopped there.  No decision yet on silver, glassware, or placemats/napkins.    I have the drop cloth/burlap runner I made last week on the table. I brought out this lovely cake stand bought at Good Will for $4.99.  It is centered on the runner.  I like the contrast between the leaded glass and the runner.  I placed the arrangement I made a few weeks ago on top of the cake stand. I added the two white candle sticks with white candles, leaf garlands, 2 small ceramic pumpkins around the cake pedestal, and stopped. I have to decide on ...
