Thrifty Treasures

A new GoodWill store opened in our county last week.  It's the first one close by, and on the opening day, it was jam packed.  There was even a wait for a shopping cart.  It was very hard to get around to shop, and the check out line went all the way around the store!  The store was filled with gorgeous items, and I managed to get my hands on a few bargains!!  For around $ 28.00, this is what I came home with.

This turquoise flower pot,

this colorful bowl, just right for the season,

this picture with fall colors (excuse the glare),

another white candlestick to add to my collection,

this long red and white table runner,

 a sweet acorn dish, and

this cover for my lap top.  It was new with tags for just over $2.00.

So, now I have this huge GW about 4 miles from my home!!  I can't keep bringing things home until I get rid of some of my old stuff.

I have plans to clean out my closets, cabinets, and decorations bins!  I seriously need to get rid of some STUFF, and I am going to try to do that in the next few weeks.  Wish me luck!  I want to try to downsize my 'stash' to one bin for each holiday/season!  I probably have 10 bins with Christmas alone.  I'm going to let my family and friends go through and get what they want, then donate the remainder.

  1. I went from a 3600 square foot house to a 950 square foot house to living homeless and staying where I volunteer at NWR. It is the most freeing thing I've done and I'm so much happier without having to wade through stuff. Much less having to work hard to get the money to buy it. You should also soon be much happier.

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...
