Converting The Bonus Room to a Private Retreat

We have a bonus room above the garage. It's quite a large room, and has never gotten any use. Well, that is about to change! I've decided to make a few changes, and claim it as my little retreat! I plan to spend very little to restyle this room.

There isn't an entrance to the room from the house. It requires going into the garage, then up about 20 stairs to reach the room. The views from the room are wonderful.

BEFORE

This room was originally meant for an extra bed room/play room for my grandson. It was never used much at all though. My neightbor painted the balloons and scenery on the walls because it would be a play room. I hope to get this room painted in the next few weeks. We are having the exterior of the house painted, and I would like to have this room painted too, if I can talk the hubby into it!! (fingers crossed). My daughter has just painted her whole house in Benjamin Moore, Grecian Green, a lovely color, so I might do that in this room, with all white ceilings!! The flooring is green, tile look, vinyl that still looks new. No wear or tear!! I can work with it though until I can get it painted, and plan to make it a cozy little getaway. Since it is not part of the main living area, it is extremely quiet up here. Great place for reading, or napping.

I've started changing things by shopping the house.

First of all, I wanted to change the bedding so, I added a light colored quilt, pillow cases I embroideried, and reversed the comforter, and folded it across the foot of the bed. So much better, already.

Back when we first built the house, I simply printed off pictures of hot air balloons to hang on the walls as art work.

I brought those frames down, cleaned them, and printed out botanical pictures from the Graphics Fairy for a change here.

So much brighter, and prettier.

There's a really OLD cabinet style TV in this room, that I can't possibly move down the stairs, so I covered it with a tablecloth, and placed a lamp, magazines and a candle on the top, using it as a table.

There's plenty of room for a sofa and love seat. I have both stored in my basement, and am thinking about how I can get those moved upstairs. I may hire someone to bring them up and at the same time remove the old TV.

My current sitting area is a Lane recliner I've had for probably 20-25 years. It's just like new, and super comfy. Makes the perfect place for a nap!!

The room has 3 windows, and 2 skylights, plenty of light in here!!

I'm thinking, if I can get the furniture moved up here, I will rearrange the furniture, and make a more cohesive sitting area! I'd like for the seating to face the windows for the views.

The stairs have 2 turns in them, and the stairwell is kinda narrow, but maybe a couple guys could move the furniture for me.

As I convert this room, I will share what I'm doing with you.

I'm excited to get it like I want it.

I think it will be a very welcoming extra guest room, as well as my quiet room. :)

Blogging Again From My Mountain Cottage, Shadymont

After a much needed rest, I'm back with a new blog name and a few slight changes, like the template, and the content will vary and not always be home decor, though that is my niche, and I will continue to have it frequently. But I want to use my blog to also give those who may read it a little encouragement into the Goodness of God. Some of the fog from my depression is lifting now and I'm starting to feel better. I've had a really hard time, personally, for the last seven months, and the divorce still isn't final. I think it is nearing being final now though, and I hope I will continue to get clarity from this fog. I have a story to tell regarding other matters, but I still am not able to talk about it quite yet. But when I say I've been through the fire, or maybe the pits of hell, just believe me. I now understand the meaning of Never say "Never"! Things can happen to us when we are vulernable that we think would never happen. ...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project. I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow. First, I found an old pillow I no longer use. I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it. I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers. I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night. The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion. I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

Bar Stools Makeover

I'm still receiving therapy by keeping my hands busy, plus today I ran quite a few errands. It's been a crying day for me today. Just so much to worry about. It seems like sometimes everything is just messed up, and there's nothing we can do to fix any of it. Night before last, I painted the bar stools. I've had them since 2000, and they were nice, but I was just in the mood to paint them!! The form of the stools had a textured bronze color, the seats were beige with the fleur de lis design, and the wood across the back was brown. Well, needless to say, they got their own coat of chalk paint in white, the seats covered in blue and white, and the boards across the back are blue. I have the fabric to make matching placemats and napkins, but today was not the day to try to sew, for me. I'm just too nervous.
