Makeover Items to Create a Set

It's not hard to figure out that turquoise is my current favorite color.  I've brought it into most of the rooms in my home.

One of the ways I brought it into my kitchen was to paint unrelated items in the same color, creating a 'set'.

I painted this knife block some time ago.

Then later, I gave the bread box a makeover with the same Valspar Paint Sample.

Last week, I picked up this letter/mail holder that had been laying in the basement forever, and dry brushed it with the same color.

Stencils were used to paint the designs and lettering on these, and by using the same color and the fleur de lis, I have a set of items.

Creating this set cost nothing since I had the stencils already, the paint was a free sample from lowes, and I had all the items for quite a while.  I like how they coordinate in my kitchen.

Do you have any items you could use this way by simply painting them?

I did a quick painting yesterday.

It is a barn in winter.  The trees in the background are meant to look gray and bare, with a few evergreens scattered around the painting.  The fence is rather ramshackle.  I received a book I had ordered on how to paint landscapes, so I hope I can learn from it and improve on my attempts to paint.

So what projects are you working on?

Linens & Things

I love finding tablecloths, runners, napkins, and other linens when I am out thrifting. Whether it be at consignment shops, GW, or yard sales, I will usually snap up a pretty linen if it doesn't have a lot of stains.  I will show you some of my favorites. I found several pieces embroideried with this design at a favorite consignment shop. This blue runner (reversible to stripes), found on consignment. This is one of the nicer quality tablecloths I have found, $4.00 at a thrift store. This cloth was around $10.00 on consignment. This runner is also reversible to polka dots, and was a consignment find. This pink and white gingham is perfect in the sun room, and is a consignment find also. This is the most valuable table cloth I have found, and it was $2.00 at a nearby yard sale.  It is a vintage Wielunder.  They sell on ebay for 30 - 90 dollars.  Mine is in pristine condition! Christmas tablecloth, consignment sale. ...

What's in the Hutch?

Yesterday I awoke in the mood to do some "deep" cleaning.  First on my list was to dust inside the china cabinet in the dining room.  Can you believe how much dust can get into a closed cabinet.  Really, how does that happen?  My cabinet has glass shelves and they were hazy with dust.  This is a rather tedious job because I not only have china inside, I have all kinds of little "pretties" stored there too.  It's one of the first things you see upon entry into our home, so I really should do this more often.  I want show you the before, sufficeth to say, it had been a while since I had tackled this chore.  Here are some photos showing the "after". Here is a collection of vases and crystal pitchers .   These were all gifts except the smallest one in the front and the one to the right of it. China and a consignment shop cake plate.  The china was formerly my MILs. More china . This little fairy lives here with her 2 sisters. They ...

Blogging Again From My Mountain Cottage, Shadymont

After a much needed rest, I'm back with a new blog name and a few slight changes, like the template, and the content will vary and not always be home decor, though that is my niche, and I will continue to have it frequently.  But I want to use my blog to also give those who may read it a little encouragement into the Goodness of God. Some of the fog from my depression is lifting now and I'm starting to feel better.  I've had a really hard time, personally, for the last seven months, and the divorce still isn't final.  I think it is nearing being final now though, and I hope I will continue to get clarity from this fog. I have a story to tell regarding other matters, but I still am not able to talk  about it quite yet.  But when I say I've been through the fire, or maybe the pits of hell, just believe me.  I now understand the meaning of Never say "Never"!  Things can happen to us when we are vulernable that we think would never  happen.  ...
