Fall Banner, and Lantern Update

While in Dollar General recently, I picked up a pack of leaf cutouts.  It contained 10 (I think) for a dollar.  I stenciled the letters F A L L on them, and made a banner for the mantel.

I've shown this lantern several times, most recently when I added a spray I made to it as an early Fall decoration.

I had been thinking about painting it white for some time, and finally decided to do it.

I used a Valspar sample paint in white, and small brushes you would use for really small crafts.  The strips over the glass on this piece are very narrow.  It was a little tedious, but I am happy with the makeover.

I painted it, sanded it for a little distressing on the corners, used an exacto blade to scrape off the places where I got paint on the glass.  I left the top as it was, except I painted the laticed area white.

Inside it holds a golden yellow candle, and colorful Fall leaves.  Then I tied burlap around the handle, and inserted some more Fall picks into that.  It sits in the sun room on my little aqua stool.

On the shelf of the stool, I added my large yellow bird, and a Fall candle ring I got at Good Will a long time ago, and added silk leaves to it to make it fuller.

I really, really like it so much better now.  I think the white will go better with whatever seasonal decor I am using.  What have you made over recently?

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

The Great White Pumpkin

Ever since I saw the pumpkins made from clothes dryer venting hose, I have wanted to make one.  It just so happened that we had some leftover vent hose in the basement, and while I was down there yesterday, I cut off a piece, taped the ends together with masking tape, and spray painted it white.  I let it dry over night.  This morning I brought it up and finished it.  This project is another freebie, because I had everything needed to complete it. I wrapped a piece of cardboard tube from wrapping paper with jute string for the stem.  Then all I had to do was stick the little sprig of orange and green in beside the stem, tie a piece of rust raffia on it, and it was done! This is a simple project, and only takes a few minutes. Once complete, I changed the coffee table vignette to include it. I placed everything in a consignment store tray I bought several years ago.  I was already using the acorns and flower arrangement on the coffee table. ...
