Old Bread Board Project

Do you ever just want a really simple little project to do?  Just something to let your creative juices get a little workout, without having to do a lot of work?  I do!  Even though you might think so, this wasn't it!

See this old bread board?

I bet the paint on this side of the board is lead paint, don't you?  That could explain a few things.  Just sayin'!

This thing has see better days and has the battle scars to prove it!  My husband had this when we married.  I don't know if it was originally his Mom's or what.  Even though I do love the patina, I decided a little makeover would just give me the quick project I was wanting......WRONG!

I knew I would paint it.  I used some left over paints and some Plaster of Paris and mixed up a white paint, with just a hint of gray.

At first I wanted to decorate it using a stencil I made from a graphic taken from the Graphics Fairy Blog.

Beautiful graphic.  I sat here and used a utility knife to cut out all the colored areas. Oh yes I did.

Big problem!! The part at the bottom that is supposed to look like a bow, looks like a dang headless frog.  At least the way I cut it out did.  I painted it on anyway! (hilarious).  Next I painted over the headless frog. Then I tried it with the bee only.  Eck!!!  I'll spare you the trauma of seeing all the horrible stages. Soooooo, now this quick little project is taking some major time.  I took it back down to the basement and painted two more coats of paint on the whole thing and hung it up let it dry for about 36 hours.

I had a couple of pieces of black and white scrapbook paper from Michael's that I had bought for about 59 cents each in my stash.  I cut out two of the design thingies and mod podged them on, slapped on some ASCP dark wax, hit it a couple of times with the palm sander, and called it done! Then I hung this masterpiece in the kitchen beside the pantry.  Oh yes I did!

I decided since it is a masterpiece, I'd just have myself a photo shoot with it!

Just look!

Well there you have it - a quick project.  Whatever!!
Moral of the story:  Once you get your 'stuff' together, and figure out what you want, you might just create a masterpiece!  (And I didn't have to spend a penny either since I already had everything).

I'm taking this beauty to these parties:

  1. I like it just the way it is! Great recycle! I used the same paper to cover light switches for my sister's scrapbook room!

  4. That is so funny. The easiest quickest projects can become a real pain in the neck. Good save though and now you not only can hang and display it, but it has a story to go with it.

Blogging Again From My Mountain Cottage, Shadymont

After a much needed rest, I'm back with a new blog name and a few slight changes, like the template, and the content will vary and not always be home decor, though that is my niche, and I will continue to have it frequently.  But I want to use my blog to also give those who may read it a little encouragement into the Goodness of God. Some of the fog from my depression is lifting now and I'm starting to feel better.  I've had a really hard time, personally, for the last seven months, and the divorce still isn't final.  I think it is nearing being final now though, and I hope I will continue to get clarity from this fog. I have a story to tell regarding other matters, but I still am not able to talk  about it quite yet.  But when I say I've been through the fire, or maybe the pits of hell, just believe me.  I now understand the meaning of Never say "Never"!  Things can happen to us when we are vulernable that we think would never  happen.  ...

Linens & Things

I love finding tablecloths, runners, napkins, and other linens when I am out thrifting. Whether it be at consignment shops, GW, or yard sales, I will usually snap up a pretty linen if it doesn't have a lot of stains.  I will show you some of my favorites. I found several pieces embroideried with this design at a favorite consignment shop. This blue runner (reversible to stripes), found on consignment. This is one of the nicer quality tablecloths I have found, $4.00 at a thrift store. This cloth was around $10.00 on consignment. This runner is also reversible to polka dots, and was a consignment find. This pink and white gingham is perfect in the sun room, and is a consignment find also. This is the most valuable table cloth I have found, and it was $2.00 at a nearby yard sale.  It is a vintage Wielunder.  They sell on ebay for 30 - 90 dollars.  Mine is in pristine condition! Christmas tablecloth, consignment sale. ...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...
