Autumn Mantel

I've changed the Fall decor on my mantel.  It was alright before, but I had an idea to decorate a piece I bought at Grand Harbor Imports probably ten years ago. It looks like a gate for a picket fence and is all white and chippy.  I have always had spring items on it and had never thought about changing it, until today.  So here is what I did!

This is how the mantel looked before:

Here it is now:

Now this speaks to me!  I'm thinking I might decorate the gate for Christmas.  We have a cathedral ceiling in the family room, and the shape of this piece plays off it.

So much for keeping things plain and simple.  Just wasn't working for me!

What do you think?  Better?

What have you changed recently?

  1. Hi Kathy!
I like this very much; colorful but not overdone. I find myself drawn to the white items with oranges and I struggle daily to keep things simple!!! Found you via Kim's party.

    Off to explore your blog!

  2. I think your mantle looks very pretty, Kathy. That little fence makes a nice backdrop for all the colorful flowers. As for what I have changed lately, that would be my blog. Forgive me if I am repeating myself because I can't remember which people I have shared this news with. I had to give up Cozy Home Scenes due to a possible legal problem with a trademark from a company. I had to start from scratch so I letting everyone know about it so they can come follow or just be a reader again. The new blog is A COZY PLACE CALLED HOME. Hope you will come over when you have time. ---------- Shannon

Blogging Again From My Mountain Cottage, Shadymont

After a much needed rest, I'm back with a new blog name and a few slight changes, like the template, and the content will vary and not always be home decor, though that is my niche, and I will continue to have it frequently.  But I want to use my blog to also give those who may read it a little encouragement into the Goodness of God. Some of the fog from my depression is lifting now and I'm starting to feel better.  I've had a really hard time, personally, for the last seven months, and the divorce still isn't final.  I think it is nearing being final now though, and I hope I will continue to get clarity from this fog. I have a story to tell regarding other matters, but I still am not able to talk  about it quite yet.  But when I say I've been through the fire, or maybe the pits of hell, just believe me.  I now understand the meaning of Never say "Never"!  Things can happen to us when we are vulernable that we think would never  happen.  ...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...

Bar Stools Makeover

I'm still receiving therapy by keeping my hands busy, plus today I ran quite a few errands.  It's been a crying day for me today.  Just so much to worry about.  It seems like sometimes everything is just messed up, and there's nothing we can do to fix any of it.   Night before last, I painted the bar stools.  I've had them since 2000, and they were nice, but I was just in the mood to paint them!!  The form of the stools had a textured bronze color, the seats were beige with the fleur de lis design, and the wood across the back was brown.  Well, needless to say, they got their own coat of chalk paint in white, the seats covered in blue and white, and the boards across the back are blue.  I have the fabric to make matching placemats and napkins, but today was not the day to try to sew, for me.  I'm just too nervous.  In fact, I didn't do anything creative today except switch out the curtains in the powder room that I only made and p...
