Simple, No Cost, No Sew, Mini-Lamp Makeover

Quite some time back, I sewed a shade cover for my rooster lamp out of burlap and cotton trim. I had quite a bit of the materials left over, and decided to use the scraps to recover this little lamp shade. You can see that the shade has seen better days, maybe a little water damage.

I gathered my supplies together, glue gun, scissors, glue stick, burlap, and trim.

At first I tried wrapping some burlap garland around the shade, but it raveled too much, and didn't give the look I wanted, so I switched to burlap fabric.

I simply wrapped the burlap around the shade and cut accordingly, allowing enough fabric to fold over and glue down.

I then placed the burlap on the shade at the seam area and ran a bead of hot glue on the shade, and attached the burlap. Next, I folded the burlap over at the top and bottom of the shade and glued it in place, making little tucks in the burlap to adjust it to fit the shade. Once the glue dried, I simply wrapped the trim around the top and bottom of the shade and cut the length needed to go around the shade. I glued one end down, wrapped the trim back around the edge and glued that down, and there you have a new shade cover for the mini light.

Isn't it a cutie??? This tiny lamp is surprisingly heavy.

It matches the shade on the rooster lamp. They are both used in the dining room.

Cost of project: zero, zilch, nada.

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it. The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little. It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it! I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before. So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00. I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway. Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project. I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow. First, I found an old pillow I no longer use. I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it. I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers. I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night. The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion. I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...
