Thrifty Little Silver Plate

The other day I visited a thrift store I had been wanting to go to!  BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!! Nothing!!!
Then I stopped by the Habitat Restore.  There was a green glass covered candy dish just like a red one I have.  It was $25.00!!!  They had the paper showing where one sold on EBay for $50.00.  I really wanted it to go with my red one, but that is more than I wanted to pay, so I left without it.

Next I stopped at an old mill building where lots of vendors have antique booths.  The majority of the stuff there was over priced as well, but it was a lot of fun to go through the booths.  I did spend $4.50 there.  This is what I bought.
Tarnished little silver dish

Once it was clean I could read           LBC, Sixth Grade, 1954  Reed and Barton

It cleaned up pretty well.  I wonder who owned it, Sixth Grade, why would it have that engraved?  Was it a gift for finishing Sixth Grade?  Who would want a silver dish in 6th grade? Was it a gift from LBC to a 6th grade teacher?  1954..... It's just 2 years younger than I am!  So it's getting old, it's been around more than 1/2 a century!         LOTS of questions about this little dish.

For now it sits on this shelf.

  2. I really like your dish. Now I'm curious about the engraving. I can't imagine. Maybe a gift to a teacher.

  3. The thrifts have been pretty dismal lately I agree (and over priced also it seems). I love your little silver dish! I really like how you displayed it. Thanks for joining JFF! hugs, Linda

  4. Great tray Kathy, and a good price. As you say strange gift for a student, but seems right for the teacher.
(1956 was a good year by the way - my birth year too!)

  5. Now that is interesting! Such a pretty silver dish, and Reed and Barton no less. Maybe it was a commencment award for a sixth grade Sunday school teacher. IDK! Sure would be nice to know wouldn't it. Enjoy it!

  8. The silver dish cleaned up very nicely. I agree that it was quite possibly a gift to a teacher. Maybe Christmas or retirement.

Thrifty Bookcase Makeover

About a year ago, I was working on a photo gallery area at the lake home. There is an area about 7x7 between the living room, and the hall bath. I bought a really inexpensive ($20.00) bookcase to use there to hold family photos. I hurriedly placed photos on it, and didn't think much about it.   The last time we were at the lake, I was sitting there looking at how badly it looked, wondering what I could do to spruce it up a little.  It had all colors/types of picture frames -red, pink floral, wood, brass, you name it!   I remembered seeing adhesive shelf liner at the Dollar General the day before.  So I made a quick trip back there, and bought one 9 ft. roll for less than $3.00.  I know this is not an original idea and has been done by lots of people, but I wanted to show you anyway.   First, I emptied out all the photos, pulled out the shelves, measured, and cut the paper to fit inside the bookcase.  I also took all the photos out of the frames and w...

Stenciled Burlap Pillow

I just have to share my no sew pillow project.  I had some burlap fabric in my fabric stash, and decided I would use it to cover a pillow.  First, I found an old pillow I no longer use.  I spread the burlap out on the floor and laid my pillow on it so I could cut the fabric big enough to cover it.  I was so intent on the project, I didn't make any pictures of the process. Once the burlap was cut, I folded in the sides about an inch, and glued it down with Tacky Glue, pressing it down several times with my fingers.  I did this all the way around the fabric, and laid it aside to dry over night.  The Tacky Glue dries clear. My next step was to determine how I could lap the fabric over the cushion in an envelope fashion.  I had tried to get my computer to print out a graphic that would show up on the burlap, but printer problems interfered with that plan, so I found the center, and stenciled it with the tree stencil I bought at Michael's. ...
