Two Thrifty Finds

My husband and I went to one of my favorite consignment shops the other day, and I found a couple of items that I really did not  need(ed).  One was a runner!  Surprise, surprise!  Y'all know I hoard runners!  I bet I have 20 or 30!!  Maybe I should do a post on all of them.  (idea). I switched out the aqua runner I had been using in the sun room, and replaced it with the new one.  Love the design and colors. I like the romantic design.  I have lots of pink and green in this room, so I'll use this in here for a while. (reverse) The runner below is the one I swapped out.  It is now in the dining room.  The two runners are somewhat similar in design with both having scalloped edges. (My other treasure) I was on the lookout for a clock like some I've been seeing on the blogs.  I don't know yet if it works, nor do I care.  I wanted it to paint and display on my bookcase, so if it does work, ...

Free Makeover of a Small Lamp

I've had this small crackled lamp for several years, and the shade had gotten so dirty. See how dirty it is?? I carried this to my craft area in the basement for a makeover.  I wasn't sure what I would find to give it an update, but I had plenty of things in my "bag of stuff". In fact, this burlap ribbon was the exact width I needed. All I had to do was use the glue gun and glue it around the shade. I had to gather it at the top of the shade in a couple of places. The base of the lamp was a beige crackle finish, so I painted it a light aqua with acrylic craft paint. I think it makes a cute addition to this tabletop vignette.  It repeats the aqua of these vintage jars. I've had these sweet cupids for a very long time, and still love them. We all love old canning jars, don't we?? I like the lamp so much better with its new color base, and spiffy chevron shade. This project took just a few mi...

Valentine Decor in the Entry

It's always fun to decorate the entry for the various holidays. After all, it's the first place a guest sees upon entering the house. The table I have in the entry is very old, and is one of my first chalk paint projects.  Since then I have added grain sack stripes to it.  It's just the right size for the spot where it sits. Everything in this vignette is old.  I added a red/white tinsel wreath to a candle stand and set the lamp on top to give it height like the tall candle stick. I made the runner last year. I added a wedding picture of my husband and me to the vignette. In this photo, you can see how narrow the wall is where I have the table.  Total spent for this vignette:  $0 Have you decorated for Valentine's? Making Fabric Hearts for Valentine's

I have been busy crafting fabric hearts to use in my Valentine's decor.  They are really easy to make.  I learned to make these last year by following a tutorial by Jane at Cottage at the Crossroads. I purchased some of the $.97 squares of fabric that are already cut and packaged for quilts.  They are not fat quarters, but are larger squares.  I can get 4 large hearts and three or four small ones from one square.  So for about $2.00, I have all these hearts.  Below a basket is filled with fabric hearts. In a dough bowl. On my twig arrangement. These are so much fun to make, and can be done while watching t.v.  Mine are not embellished like those Jane makes, but they work fine. I hope you will try making these.  Thanks to Jane for sharing the tutorial on these! Frugal Valentine Mantel Decor

It may seem a little early for some of you, but I was so tired of the snowmen, snowflakes, and wintery decor that I decided to go ahead and decorate for Valentine's Day.  Pops of red seem warm and cheery. The first thing I usually change for any occasion, is the mantel. I used my consignment shutter, some Dollar Tree flowers and heart-shaped vases, candles, a baske (recent consignment find) and updated my Christmas/Winter wreath from the front door, by adding a Dollar Tree red tinsel heart to it, and hanging it on the mirror above the mantel.  The only new items are the red doilies (Michael's) - I think they were $1.00 each, the red basket, and the red tinsel heart attached to the wreath. This wreath was decorated with green ball ornaments during Christmas.  I removed the ornaments, and hung a snowman in the center until I brought it in and attached the heart.  So this wreath has already been recycled twice.   I spent ve...

The Everchanging Trug

I've had this trug (tool box), or whatever you want to call it, for a year or so, and it has seen some changes from the way it looked when I first bought it at a small shop for $20.00.  I fell in love with the trug, loved the chippiness, the color....not so much.  I let it keep it's original color for a few days though.  After a few days, it got a coat of white, and some dark wax, and the inside partitions got a light blue.  I liked it better in white. It was about that time that I learned how to transfer graphics to wood using mod podge, so that was the next change.  I added a rooster to both sides of the trug.   Yesterday was the day to update it.  I had just a wee bit of ASCP in blue left in a sample jar.  So I added just a little water to thin it some, and brushed it on to the trug. I had just enough dried hydrangeas to place some in each section.  It is on the side table in the dining room.  When I get tim...

Birds, Everywhere

This post was written some time ago, but I've never shared it.  I have quite a collection of birds and here are some of them. Sharing some of my little birds at the lake house. These two cuties sit on a 'heart' shelf in the bookcase.  The bird house is Home Interiors. These two came from Dollar General.  The heart shelf was a yard sale find. This figurine was my Mother in law's.  I just love it! One more bird, Miss Duckie: Birds at the mountain house:  (from Dollar Tree)   (From Cracker Barrell)  ( Hobby Lobby & Dollar Tree)   (Consignment)  ( Consignment)  ( Dollar Tree)   (Consignment) (Consignment) ( Dollar Tree) (Michael's) I have birds in the mountain home, birds at the lake house!  Birds, they're everywhere!!
