Turquoise Corner

I'm fighting the urge to go shopping for more "stuff" (that I do NOT need), so I decided to give this tall candle stick a makeover.   I found this some years ago at Kirkland's, and it had a little piece at the bottom that had been broken off, so instead of $49.99, it was $10.00.  It started out gold, then I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Olde White, with dark wax for the first update.  Well, it was looking kinda blah, so I painted it with Green Water by Valspar.  Olde White  Green Water   I brushed the paint on, not trying to get it into every crevice, because I planned to distress it.  While the paint was not quite dry, I gently rubbed a sanding block across the areas where I wanted the white to show through. This made it very easy to get a distressed look.  While I had the paint out, I painted this little angel plaque. It was drying quicker than the candle stick, so I had to rub a little more t...

The Deeper Hues of Fall

I'm not ready to go all out for Fall, just yet, but it's getting harder and harder not to bring out all the oranges and rusts.  I finally gave in, somewhat, and made a spray for the green lantern/ bird cage in the sun room.  Since the colors in there are green, white, and pink , I chose plum colors for the spray. Here is the lantern without anything attached to it. I dug through some of my bins in the basement, and found a few scraps of faux florals that were deep plum in color.  I fastened them together with metal and plastic ties.   The spray consists of a piece of vine with small lavender flowers which I cut into 4 pieces to make it shorter and easier to work with.  Then I had two small sprays with the berries, and the deep lilac looking flowers, and one huge bunch of grapes.  Once I got everything tied together, I attached it to the handle of the lantern with the burlap ribbon without tying a bow. Once the spray was attached, i...

Breakfast Table Vignette

I changed up the vignette on the breakfast table recently.  I had been using a small trug to hold S/P, napkins, and other table essentials.  I had painted the pink trug white, and applied graphics to it. It had been on the table for quite some time.  It was time for a change.   I gathered some colorful objects together and filled this basket. All items were consignment finds with the exception of the hen which I bought at Ross.   Isn't she so sweet? The colors blend well together. While in the breakfast nook, I made a quick addition to the pie safe.  This lovely plate is also a consignment find. I'm liking the gold, green, and red tones in the vignette, and on this plate. Painting Grain Sack Stripes on an Old Table & Trunk

Lots of folks in blog land are adding stripes to furniture, tables, fabric, and all kinds of things.  I have added stripes to a couple of items that I want to share with you. This table belonged to my paternal grandmother.  I barely remember her.  I do remember using this table like a desk as a little girl.  It was dark brown.  Years later, I started sanding the top and went through multiple layers of paint.  Even an old newspaper sheet was underneath all the paint.  I had used a stripper though, and the paper was ruined, so I don't know why it was there.   When I first started blogging, I was introduced to Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  This table was the first item I painted with it (Olde White).  I was getting the feel of the paint and dark wax, and ended up waxing it very heavily.  I decided I liked the "stripped" look that the wax brought to the table, so I left it that way. Here is the table before the stripes were added....
