Spiffing the Jelly Cupboard

I was thumbing through the latest copy of This Old House  magazine and saw the picture of a cabinet with the shelves decorated with yellow and green dishware, so I decided the jelly cupboard needed to be tweaked a little.  I used yellow and green, but left some red too since the back of the cupboard is red.  Here is how it looks now. All the items in the cupboard were bought at thrift shops except the red candy dish and the floral pot.  They both came with the hubby, but I think they were thrifted as well. I love the chicken wire in the doors.  That was not planned, but one of the glasses got broken, so I removed the other, and added chicken wire.  Rooster plate (consignment) Floral plate (thrift shop) Green casserole (antique shop) Green oval leaf dishes (consignment shop) Yellow Bee Containers (charity thrift shop) Sharing with: The Scoop Tweak It Tuesday Inspire Me Nifty Thrifty Tuesday Trash...

A Touch of Blue

I recently bought a sample bottle of Louis Blue ASCP and decided I would use some to make a small change to a table I have in the powder room.  This is a very quick project but I think it makes for a sweet change.   This table has been around a long time.  I remember finding it at KMart, priced wrong, and I think I got it for around $15.00 because of the pricing error.  It was originally trimmed with green, and had yellow flowers in the corners and front of drawer.  I originally changed it by painting it with one coat of ASCP Olde White.  This is how it looked after the first change. BEFORE I had sanded the edges to let some of the green show through.  BEFORE To change it, I only painted the edges of the table, the knob, and the little groove along the bottom of the drawer.  Here is how it looks with the blue trim. While the blue paint was barely wet, I took a damp cloth and lightly wiped it to get allow some of the gree...

Grab Bag Giveaway

I had an appointment for a haircut and was a little early, so I did some browsing at Michael's next door.  Outside in front of the store, they had a bin of large bags just bulging with items for $2.00 per bag.  I decided to get one, and it was jam-packed with goodies.  It contained: 37 journals, 3 pks. Thank you notes, 5 pks. of note cards, 3 writing pads, 16 votive holders, a roll of trim, and two sets of rhinestone stickers.  All this loot for $2.00. So..... More Bargains and Altered Bottles

I promised I would show you what I bought at Hobby Lobby on my little shopping spree the other day.   I really like the altered bottles showing up in blogs and on Pinterest and have made a few of my own. Granted,  I would rather have vintage bottles, but the prices on some of those are just outrageous.  I got two bottles at HL for $1.49 each.  (1/2 price sale)  Here are some of the bottles I have recently altered. All I did was tie raffia around the neck, and attach this key I also bought there ($1.99) The green bottle was also $1.49, and the key on it is the key to my late husband's mother's home.  Jute string is wrapped around the neck of the green bottle to hold the key. The pink bird (holds a tea light) was considered "Easter", and was only 80 cents.  It was originally $7.99.  That's 90% off.  If I had seen more of these, I would have bought several colors at that price.  This decorative hook was 1/2 p...

It's a Pink Spring

I've noticed a lot of pink popping up around Shadymont. My Mother's hanky even has pink around the edge.  I am really enjoying the sweet platter too. My new "old" sewing drawer is filled with pink. This sweet vase holds tiny pink roses that match the ones on its sides. Pink flowers in the tote. Pink in the sunroom. Pink in the urn. Even pink in the door wreath.   What colors say Spring at your house? Sharing with: Nifty Thrifty Tuesday Inspire Me Tuesday    Tweak It Tuesday

Let's Texturize!

Do you like the depth that texture gives to your decor?  The top shelf on my small book case has some great examples of using texture in small ways for a big impact.   My granddaughter and I went 'exploring' the other day, and I found this old amber bottle against a tree near the road.  It's probably a beer bottle, but I liked the color, and the short neck, so I brought it home, and washed it off, and here it is. Some of the dirt residue can be seen inside it, but I don't mind.  At first I tied a tag on it, but didn't like that, so I rummaged through some old jewelry, and found this filigreed heart from years ago, slipped it on some lace I found at a yard sale, and looped it over the bottle.  Love the texture of the lace and heart.  Something old and dirty can become a treasure with a little imagination. It sits beside this bottle.  I like its unique shape, and had already accessorized it with burlap ribbon and this cross bookmark that was m...

The Blue Sewing Drawer

If you have seen my recent posts, you have seen where I found a bargain in this lovely vintage sewing drawer.  I hinted that I might lighten it, and today was the day! I used ASCP in Louis Blue, 1 coat I removed the drawer pull, and painted it white with acryllic paint.  I had these two appliques which I also painted white, and glued to each side.  I left the grooves on the front of the drawer dark for some dimension. I didn't distress it or add any wax to it, just one coat of paint.   This bunch of roses came from Kirkland's several years ago.  The large silky rosette is a piece of ribbon that I just gathered up to resemble a rose, add a doily, and there you have it.  I used Tacky Glue to adhere the appliques.  Very simple update for this drawer, but it made a huge difference.     You will be seeing a lot of this little drawer.  I love it and it was such a great bargain at only $7.99. ...
